Volunteer Programs

volunteer projects

All projects are supported by volunteer programs. Programs like childcare, teaching, medical & health, community development, engineering, agriculture (aquaponics), computer & technology and a literature program.

Andriesvale is located in a remote area, 1000km away from Cape Town and 200km away from the nearest town called Upington. For this reason there is a minimum of 3 weeks volunteer participation and preferably a minimum of 4 volunteers arrival at a time. (We can be contacted  for special arrangements).

The volunteers pay for their food, lodging  and transport to Andriesvale. The volunteer programs creates jobs within the community. The volunteers live in the community itself and will be serviced by the community. This ensures that the volunteer programs form part of the community’s prosperity. The volunteer accommodation is new, very comfortable and safe and belongs to the community. Volunteers can expect to share a room with 1 to 3 other volunteers. Bedrooms are comprised of single beds and bunkbeds with bedding provided. Solar electricity is used and the toilets are eco-toilets. Drinking water is pure clean water using water from air technology. Water for shower and other uses are purified borehole water. Wifi is a challenge and is being investigated at the moment. 3 meals a day are provided during the week. Over the weekends volunteers are provided with provisions with which they can prepare their own meals.

Even though you are in a remote part of South Africa, there will be activities you can participate in, at your own cost. These can be arranged with the liaisons at the accommodation.

Please remember that the impact you will have on the community will be invaluable. We have also found that the impact these programs have on the lives of the volunteers are priceless and  with the Khomani San community  you will feel it in your heart. You will learn and you will gain experiences that you will treasure for the rest of your life.

Please bear in mind, that no matter what program you participate in, the object is to assist with the transition into a more inclusive society.  The aim is to get the community to be sustainable, prosperous and thriving, on their own terms and in their own way. So, we will always be respectful and follow their lead.

Preference of arrivals is on a Thursday at Cape Town International airport. You will be collected at the airport and transferred to your Cape Town accommodation for two nights. On Friday you will receive orientation and a tour of Cape Town city. Saturday morning we will take the long drive to Andriesvale. We will however overnight, en-route, in either Springbok or Calvinia depending on accommodation availability. (Lunch and dinner on own account while traveling). You will continue the journey to Andriesvale on Sunday and you can expect to arrive there in the afternoon.

Mondays to Fridays are your typical volunteer days and you will be introduced to the various projects on the first day. All projects are within walking distance from the accommodation except for the agriculture (aquaponics) project. A typical day would be 8/8h30 start, lunch between 12h00 to 13h30 with your duties continuing after lunch and finishing around 16h30. These times could vary depending on the project itself. Dinner will be served around 18h30/19h00 at the volunteer accommodation.
